The Memphis Grizzlies are baffling.
For many years, they have outperformed their inherent metrics because their grit-and-grind style enabled them to win close games more frequently than other squads. That devotion to defensive excellence and physical drama became synonymous with those Beale Street inhabitants.
However, what happens?
Zach Randolph and vince Carter have departed into the Sacramento Kings. Tony Allen and JaMychal Green remain free agents, and there’s no telling if they will return to their old stomping grounds for 2017-18. The roster feels more than it has in years, depleted.
And yet, Mike Conley and Marc Gasol are nonetheless current. Provided that the group’s two best players remain in precisely the same uniform, they will be undeniably competitive on both ends of the ground. Each deserves to be at the All-Star mix season in and year out, and they’ve taken over because the Grizzlies’ true leaders.
Is that enough? Can Memphis supplement both celebrities’ efforts?
Betting on the Grizzlies falling entirely out of the playoff conversation would be absurd, no matter where they end up in the Western hierarchy. However, the chances seem far longer this time around.
