Häromdagen följde jag med min gudie-kollega på Strömma Eva på sightseeing i LA. Hon jobbar som guide i USA också och den här gången skulle hon ha en 15-dagarstur i västra USA som just började i Los Angeles. Väldigt intressant! Även fast jag bott i LA i tre år, så har jag aldrig varit på en sightseeing tur (nej, studio-turen på Universal Studios räknas inte…) och kan egentligen inte så mycket om stadens historia. Tack Eva för att du delade med dig av all din kunskap!

The other day I joined my Swedish tourist guide colleague, Eva, for a sightseeing tour in LA. She works as a tour guide in the US when she’s not working for Strömma in Stockholm and this time she was going to guide a 15 day long tour on the west coast of the US, which started in Los Angeles. Very interesting! Even though I’ve lived in LA for three years, I have never been on a sightseeing tour (and no, the studio tour at Universal Studios doesn’t count…) and don’t know a lot of the history of the city. Thank you Eva for sharing your tremendous knowledge!

Förra veckan filmade jag en scen för långfilmen Tomorrow. Vi var på en vårdcentral i ett litet rum som i filmen ska föreställa en förlossningssal. Min uppgift i scenen var helt enkelt att föda barn. Det är ju alltid lite speciellt när man ska porträttera något som man själv aldrig har gått igenom. Jag försöker alltid översätta situationen till något liknande som jag har varit med om (och i det här fallet öka intensiteten det med några hundra procent…) och genom det förhoppningsvis göra situationen rättvisa inför de som faktiskt varit med om det på riktigt. Om jag lyckades eller inte får vi se i februari…

Last week I shot a scene for the feature film Tomorrow. We were at a health center in a tiny room that in the movie is supposed to be a delivery room. My task in the scene was simply to give birth. It’s always a bit special when you are going to portray something you haven’t personally experienced. I always try to translate the situation to something similar that I have experienced (and in this case increase the intensity some hundred percent…) and through that do justice to the situation to those who actually have experienced it for real. In February we’ll find out if I succeeded or not….

Vilken dag jag hade igår! Lång och svettig, men framförallt rolig. Dock började den inte så roligt… Väckarklockan ringde redan kl 5.30 och jag såg framemot att långsamt vakna till liv med en varm, lång dusch. Men så blev det inte. Vattnet var inte det minsta varmt. Jag lät det rinna ett tag, tänkte att det kanske tar tid för varmvattnet att komma igång så här tidigt på morgonen. Ökade temperaturen lite, men ingen skillnad, så det var bara att hoppa in ändå. Det fick helt enkelt bli en kall, kort dusch istället. Och visst vaknar man till av det också. Lite snabbare bara…
Sen åkte jag till Disneys Golden Oak Ranch i Newhall norr om Los Angeles för att filma en (hemlig) promo. Vilket ställe! Det är så fantastiskt att man genom jobbet får se och uppleva så många olika platser! Ranchen är en ”vanlig” ranch med åkermark och hästar, men även ett filmset med såväl natur- som stadsmiljöer. Vi filmade i stadsmiljön. Iklädd jeans, långärmad tröja och en massa solskyddskräm dansade och log jag hela dagen lång i den 33-gradiga hettan. Puh! Då längtade jag verkligen tillbaka till den iskalla morgonduschen… Men teamet var helt fantastiskt och kom med vatten och paraplyer mot solen så fort vi hade en liten paus, vilket gjorde allt så mycket lättare.
Trött men glad efter en rolig inspelning körde jag tillbaka till Los Angeles för att snabbt hinna upp i lägenheten för att byta om på en minut och sedan rusa ut igen för att möta upp min fina vän Birgitta och gå på ABBA: The Concert på Hollywood Bowl. Vi hann precis sätta oss innan förbandet, MenAlive – The Orange County Gay Men’s Chorus, drog igång. Vilken tajming! Det var första gången jag var på Hollywood Bowl och det lär inte bli den sista. Verkligen häftig arena! Och ABBA-showen var fantastisk! Alla 14 000 i publiken stod upp och dansade och sjöng med. Vi hade såååå kul! Efteråt gick vi backstage för att säga hej och tack till gruppen och stannade och pratade tills de var tvungna att åka till hotellet.
Väl hemma igen skulle jag äntligen få min efterlängtade dusch, men märkte till min förtvivlan att det fortfarande bara kom kallvatten. Jag vred kranen mot varmare och hoppades att uppvärmningen skulle gå snabbare då, men icke. Det var väl bara att ta tjuren vid hornen igen då. Precis innan jag skulle kliva in i duschen fick jag för mig att vrida kranen åt andra hållet istället. Och, surprise, då kom varmvattnet! Efter tre år i samma lägenhet har jag tydligen inte ännu lärt mig hur min dusch fungerar… Ridå.

What a day I had yesterday! Long and sweaty, but most of all: fun! But it didn’t start fun at all… The alarm clock woke me up at 5:30 am and all I could look forward to at that point was to slowly come to life with a long, warm shower. But that didn’t happen. The water wasn’t warm at all. I let it run for a while, thought that since it was so early in the morning it might take some time for the water to heat up. Increased the temperature a bit, but nothing happened. So I just had to jump in there and I had a short, cold shower instead. But you do come to life with one of those too. Just a little bit faster…
Then I drove to Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch in Newhall north of Los Angeles to shoot a (secret) promo. What a place! One thing that is fantastic about my job is that you get to see and experience so many different places! The ranch is a ”regular” ranch with farmland and horses, but also a film set with both natural settings and urban environments. We were filming in the business district. Wearing jeans, a long sleeved sweater and a lot of sunscreen I spent the whole day dancing and smiling in the 92-degree heat. Phew! I really longed for that freezing morning shower at that point… But the team was fantastic and brought us water and umbrellas to give us some shade as soon as we had a short break, which made the day so much more pleasant.
Tired but happy after this fun shoot I drove back to Los Angeles for a short pit stop at my apartment to change clothes really quickly and rush out again to meet up with my dear friend Birgitta to go see ABBA: The Concert at the Hollywood Bowl. We’d just barely sat down when it all started with MenAlive – The Orange County Gay Men’s Chorus as supporting artist. Great timing! It was my first visit to the Hollywood Bowl and definitely not the last. What a cool venue! And on top of that: the ABBA show was fantastic! Every single one of the 14,000 people in the audience was standing up dancing and singing along. We had sooo much fun! After the concert we went back stage for a meet and greet and stayed until they had to leave.
Back home after a long day I would finally get my well deserved shower. But to my despair the water was still cold! I increased the temperature by turning the rotary knob a lot, thinking it might get warmer faster, but it didn’t. Once again I had to grab the bull by its horns and just face the cold water. Just as I was getting in there I somehow got the idea of turning the rotary knob the other way. And, surprise, there was the hot water. Three years in the same apartment and I obviously still don’t know how my shower works… Over and out.

Fall Launch Event at Scandinavian Kollektiv
Igår kväll var jag på Scandinavian Kollektiv för lanseringen av deras höstkollektion. Scandinavian Kollektiv är en liten boutique på 8024 W. 3rd Street i Los Angeles som drivs av Susanne Karlsson. De har i huvudsak damkläder, men även herr- och barnkläder, väskor, smycken och lite hem- och husgeråd, allt gjort av skandinaviska designers. Väldigt fin butik. Susanne designar och tillverkar även ett eget klädmärke, men berättade igår att hon drömmer om att öppna hotell och restaurang. Hennes kläder är fantastiska, men jag tror att hon kommer bli minst lika framgångsrik med restaurangen. Igår på eventet bjöds vi på höstdrink och tilltugg. Förutom kakor från Croft Alley på 8428 Melrose Place samt ost och kex hade Susanne gjort egen smaksättning på pecan- och macadamianötter + helt makalöst goda (glutenfria) plättar med lax, crème fraiche och dill. Underbara! Jag fick receptet, så nu måste jag bara skaffa mig ett plättlägg…

Last night I attended the fall launch event at Scandinavian Kollektiv, which is a small lifestyle boutique at 8024 W. 3rd Street, CA 90048, owned by Susanne Karlsson. They have mainly women’s wear, but also men’s and children’s wear, accessories and some home and kitchen items, everything designed by Scandinavian designers. Such a lovely boutique! Susanne is not only the owner, she also designs and makes her own clothing line with knit wear, but she told us yesterday that she’s dreaming of opening a hotel and a restaurant. Her clothes are amazing, but I think she will be just as successful opening a restaurant. At the event we were served a fall drink and hors d’ouvres. Along with cookies made by Croft Alley at 8428 Melrose Place and cheese and crackers, Susanne had made her own seasoning of pecan and macadamia nuts + incredibly delicious (gluten free) small Swedish pancakes with salmon, crème fraiche and dill on top. They were out of this world! I got the recipe, so now I just need to get me a pancake pan…

Idag har varit en bra dag. Många positiva besked under dagen och en fantastisk avslutning. Jag är nyss hemkommen från Los Angeles Center Studios och filmpremiären av Synapse, en sci-fi thriller regisserad, filmad och klippt av Kenlon Clark. Manuset är skrivet av Adam G. Simon, som också spelar huvudrollen (och just hemkommen från Toronto International Film Festival där hans film Man Down visats). Vilken film! Och med tanke på att den gjorts på inga pengar alls: Vilken film!!! Fantastiska skådespelarinsatser, snyggt filmat, superbt klippt – inte en tråkig sekund. Jag är så imponerad! Efter visningen hölls en frågestund (Q&A) med Kenlon, Adam och skådespelarna. Verkligen intressant och lärorikt att höra hur de kom på idén och hur skådespelarna arbetat med sina roller. Och, förutom att de hade en otroligt liten budget, så blev jag förvånad över att det gick så snabbt att filma allt (den innehåller många fightscener): 11 dagar tog det bara! Men sen tog det ett år att göra alla visuella effekter…
Nu är det verkligen dags att gå och lägga sig. Imorgon väntar en ny händelserik dag 🙂 God natt!

Today has been a good day. Many positive things happened and then a great ending of the day. I just got back home from Los Angeles Center Studios and the premiere of the movie Synapse. It’s a sci-fi thriller directed, filmed and edited by Kenlon Clark. The screenplay is written by Adam G. Simon, who also plays the lead role (and just got back from Toronto International Film Festival where his movie Man Down was screened). What a movie! And considering the very very low budget: What a movie!!! Amazing actors, great cinematography, superbly edited – not a single boring moment. I’m so impressed! After the screening there was a Q&A with Kenlon, Adam and the cast. Very interesting and informative to learn about how they came up with the idea and how the actors worked with their roles. And, except from the low budget, I was surprised that it only took 11 days to shoot the movie (even though it has a lot of fight scenes!). But then, on the other hand, it took a year to do the visual effects…
Now it’s really time to go to bed. Tomorrow awaits a new eventful day 🙂 Good night!

FABLife with Tyra Banks
Idag hade jag lite egentid och åkte till The Culver Studios och kollade på inspelningen av Tyra Banks nya daytime talkshow ”FABLife”, som hon leder tillsammans med Chrissy Tiegen, Joe Zee, Leah Ashley och Lauren Makk och som hade premiär igår på ABC7. Det var roligt! Och intressant. Hon tog bland annat upp vikten av att ta en paus från sin mobiltelefon ett par timmar om dagen för att vara i verkligheten och, kanske ännu viktigare, att börja slå numren till de tre viktigaste personerna i ditt liv för hand (istället för att leta upp dem i telefonboken) under tre månader. Då kommer hjärnan att memorera numren för all framtid, vilket kan vara livsavgörande i en kritisk situation om batteriet till din mobil har dött och du inte har någon möjlighet att ladda den. Det var också ganska intressant när de raddade upp en hel bänk med saker och funktioner som nu finns i våra mobiler, men som man för 20 år sedan hade som egna föremål, som t.ex. miniräknare, telefonbok, kompass, kartbok, Walkman, väckarklocka och anteckningsbok. Ganska Feng Shui 🙂

Today I had some me time and went to The Culver Studio to watch the taping of Tyra Banks’ new daytime talkshow ”FABLife”, which she hosts along with Chrissy Tiegen, Joe Zee, Leah Ashley and Lauren Makk and that premiered yesterday at ABC7. It was fun! And interesting. She talked about, among other things, the importance of taking a break from your cell phone for a few hours a day to be in the reality and, perhaps even more important, to start dialing the three most important people in your life ”by hand” (that is: not using speed dial) for three months. If you do that your brain will memorize these numbers forever, which can be crucial in a critical situation if your mobile died and you’re not able to charge it. It was also pretty interesting when they showed a counter full of items and functions that you nowadays have access to in your phone, but 20 years ago had as separate article,s like a calculator, phone book, compass, map, Walkman, alarm clock and note book. Pretty Feng Shui 🙂
LA Indie Film Festival
Igår var jag med Maria på LA Indie Film Festival, som ordnas för sjunde gången. Jag älskar att gå på filmfestivaler för att se filmer från olika länder och av (just nu) okända filmskapare. De är så otroligt inspirerande! Och tur för mig att jag bor i Los Angeles: det ordnas närmare 300 (!) filmfestivaler i LA varje år. Gårdagens film, Proud Citizen, har visats på åtskilliga festivaler runt om i världen och även vunnit priser. Den handlar om en bulgarisk pjäsförfattare som åker till Kentucky för att hennes pjäs ska sättas upp där. En väldigt fin (och rolig) film om ensamhet, vänskap, kärlek och föräldraskap. Och hästar. Yesterday I and Maria visited the 7th LA Indie Film Festival. I love going to film festivals to watch movies from different countries and made by (at the moment) unknown filmmakers. It’s so inspiring, refreshing in a way. And lucky me to be living in Los Angeles: there are around 300 (!) film festivals in LA every year. Yesterday’s film, Proud Citizen, has been screened at several festivals around the world and has also won prizes. It’s about a Bulgarian playwright who visits Kentucky to attend the premiere of her play. A very beautiful (and funny) movie about loneliness, friendship, love and parenthood. And horses. Brunch at Mud Hen Tavern
Idag har jag hunnit med mycket! Började dagen med att träna för att sen hinna förbi banken innan dagens audition. Därefter direkt till Mud Hen Tavern för brunch med ett gäng härliga vänner. Fantastisk brunch! Marc jobbar som kock på restaurangen, så han visste exakt vad vi skulle beställa. Dock inte hur mycket. Så vi överbeställde och rullade därifrån mer än mätta, nöjda och belåtna. Efter brunchen hann jag förbi minnesstunden för en amerikansk regissör som jag jobbat med i Sverige, för att därpå gå på bio och ta en kaffe med min fina vän Maria. Puh! En väldigt händelserik dag. Och dessutom kom det några regnstänk också! Bara en sån sak!

Today I have accomplished a lot! I started the day with a workout and then I made a visit to the bank before today’s audition. Then directly to Mud Hen Tavern to have brunch with some fabulous friends. Amazing brunch! Marc works as a chef at the restaurant, so he knew exactly what to order. But not how much… So we over-ordered and rolled out more than full, happy and contended. After the brunch I made it to the memorial of an American director I worked with in Sweden, to subsequently go to see a movie and have a coffee with my dear friend Maria. Phew! What an eventful day. And furthermore: it rained a little bit! How about that?!

Det är fortfarande väldigt varmt i Los Angeles, och i min lägenhet, så det var en befrielse att få sätta sig i bilen (som har ac) och köra ut i den sega eftermiddagsrusningen för att gå på en audition. Sen tillbaka till lägenheten för att byta om och åka iväg på den amerikanska bio-premiären av den holländska filmen ”The Dinner” (regi: Menno Meyjes) som anordnades av Film Festival Flix och inleddes med mingel, ost och vin. Filmen tar upp många intressanta frågeställningar, bl.a. hur långt du är beredd att gå för att skydda ditt barn, och lämnade oss i publiken med mycket att prata om efteråt.

It’s still very hot in Los Angeles, and in my apartment, so for once it was a big relief to take the car (that has air condition) and drive during rush hour to an audition. Then back to the apartment to change to go to the theatrical release of the Dutch movie ”The Dinner” (directed by Menno Meyjes). The event, that started with a wine and cheese reception, was arranged by Film Festival Flix. The movie raised interesting topics, like how far you are willing to go to protect your child, and left us, the audience with a lot to talk about after the screening.
