About Reaching A Long Term Goal

En gradering är svintuff, let me tell you.

Last night, I reach a goal I’ve been talking about for years. As you maybe know, I’ve been in and out of ortho’s offices and surgeries, mixed with hours and hours at the gym doing rehab where the first exercise is more boring than the next. It’s hurt, both physically and in my head. And in the heart. Specially the latter every time I’ve had a setback and when I couldn’t do what I’ve wanted to. When I’ve talked to people, I’ve said that don’t think I’ll ever go back to karate, but that I’ve always thought about the fact I didn’t get that black belt.

Then an idea started to form. As I grew stronger and more stable in my knees, I thought: why don’t you go back into the dojo and just try. See what happens. Just take it easy and do the basic exercises. And  was I surprised when most of it was still there, six years after I quit the last time. My body remembered! Then I had the next thought. I first thought this project would take two years. It took four months. Since last night, I can finally call myself a black belt.

The exam is gruelling, let me tell you. It’s insanely exhausting! For those of you who haven’t seen one, you perform a series of techniques, in a certain order, in a certain way in front of a jury. It takes about two hours and you give your everything, physically and mentally, in every movement. As far as the physical effort, I’d compare it to a Vasalopp. Fact is, I’m more sore today than after the Nattvasa earlier this spring!

It hasn’t quite sunken in yet. It probably won’t until the black belt ceremony in the beginning of the next semester, but I can tell you that it feels awesome! Three of us tried for the belt, and three of us passed the exam. So proud of my team mates and myself!

Tävling

Race report Nattvasan

Vi klarade det! Jävlar i min låda!

  1. Först och främst ta sig i mål! – check!
  2. Inte komma sist! – check
  3. Komma in på 7 timmar.

We did it! I’ll be damned! And what an experience as well. Half of the people in Dalarna had gone out and were cheering from the top of their lungs way past midnight with lit torches and burning fires. It was magical and I wanted to stop and take photos. Of course I couldn’t because, you know, I was in a race, haha! Would never had made it to Mora then.

So, the race?
The start was very cool. Everyone had their head lights off and then lit them at the same time just before the start. When they lifted the gates, everyone cheered and started out slowly just enjoying the experience. Not like the usual flood gates and stress! Then we hit the first hill and the game was back on, haha! Overall, we had a pretty nice ride down to Mora. Our plan was to take it slow and not chase after a specific time. Halfway, in Evertsberg, I had a real dip. I was so cold that I had hypothermia. If it wasn’t for Erik, I would maybe had quit the race then. But I changed into dry and warmer clothes and continued to fight. After a while, I had got the heat back up and could continue to ski properly again. After the last check point, I felt the competitiveness rise in my veins (that, and the fact that I had eaten an energy gel with caffeine) and I started to chase the clock and other teams. Finished as team 290 of 800. I feel it’s a pretty good result given the very lacking preparations before the race!

The race wouldn’t have been possible without Erik who pushed and pepped me to continue. And fixed my awesome skis! I overtook people left and right going downhill. For the record, it’s quite a special feeling to set off down a slope with no more than a few metres of clear vision, let alone seeing where the track goes!

We also had great support from my parents who met us at a check point with cheers and drink, and our amazing friend Magnus and nephew who met us in Evertsberg and every check point after that with a buffet of every snack possible! A huge thank you for that!

Also, a big thank you to Craft Sportswear who not only made this whole experience possible because they gave us the start, but also for the great clothes and equipment. Not only did we look good in them, they were very comfortable too!

And the goals?

  1. First of all: to finish! Check!
  2. Not finish last! Check!
  3. Finish around seven hours. Check on that too. 7h 12 min 8 sec.

Will I race again? Probably. But I will never come to the start this unprepared again, haha! How about the classic Vasaloppet? No, I don’t think so, actually. This race I could skate and that is too fun to give up.

Now, my body is quite sore and I hurt in weird places like the toes, and I can’t really lift my right arm. Today will be spent waxing skis for the people racing tomorrow and I’ll try to make sure they have as good skis as I had!
