Spoon carving tools. Hand forged. wood carving tool. Scorp Tool.

However, it suffers from the same problem as the other hook knives on our list. This model frequently doesn’t come sharp, which is a pain to deal with, especially for beginners.

These knives were previously sold under the brand name Frosts. Mora of Sweden no longer uses that brand name for these tools, but they are the same high quality carving knives. The tools were every thing I expected, since I have a few of the laminated knives from a former purchase.

The straight knife is the woodcarving workhorse. It is used for a myriad of different jobs from roughing to fine detail work. It also has a wide, slicing bevel referred to as a “Scandinavian grind”. Most pocket knives don’t have this type of bevel and that makes them a poor substitute. Recommending a straight knife is easy – The Mora 106 is an excellent balance of value for money with a good quality knife, and it’s used extensively throughout the world by woodcarvers.

That means you can push with your left hand or pull with your right, which may be what some users prefer. It’s also made from manganese alloy steel, which is extremely strong, though it doesn’t have the same corrosion resistance that stainless steel has. What ultimately drops this hook knife to last place on our list is the blade’s odd angle. The only real downside to this blade is that a small fraction of the shipped units arrive dull, or less than razor sharp.

Since I have started using the spoon carving kit items, I feel pretty good about what I am able to make. The knife is plenty sharp and the deep hook and soft curve carving knives work well for a new wood carver. I can use the tools with confidence and I can say I still have all my fingers. I enjoy wood carving and I plan to make this a hobby worthwhile. This beginner wood carving knives set is designed for a new carver doing detailed or simple work, best for starting whittling or general woodcarving.

  • Hook knives come in left and right-handed versions, and although experienced carvers use both, most beginners will be happy enough with a single knife for their dominant hand.
  • Students should have some experience working with hand tools, carving knives and wood, and will build skills related to spoon carving, tool use and sharpening.
  • It has an internal radius of 0.5 inches which makes it great for carving any size wooden spoon.
  • With the whittling knife, you give shape to the spoon, then with the hook knife, you cut out the spoon and smooth wood out and that’s all, your spoon is ready.

Spoon carving tools set is ideal for cutting spoons from a wood. This set includes a whittling knife and wood carving spoon hook knife.

Notice how in carving the spoons’ back the knife is pushed along by the left hand(bottom) fingers. This is a most important technique used constantly in spoon carving. The knife hand is pushing gently away from the edge against the other hand, the opposite hand providing the power for the cut. This opposition of the hands is one of the most important secrets to fine knife control.

Well, the internal radius to the best spoon carving knife is similarly as important to know like the length to a whittling knife. Even though this is number 3 on our list of best spoon carving knives it definitely deserves the number 2 spot. Unlike the 164, the Mora 162 offers a high carbon steel blade with a double edge. Luckily, for a decent hook knife, it is quite affordable to purchase and even easier to maintain, but I would not advise buying just any hook knife.

The carving axe is used for roughing out shapes. It removes as much wood as possible before knives are employed. It has a wide bevel of around 8-10mm that enables it to slice the surface of the wood like a knife. As such carving axes are kept very sharp like a knife – unlike axes for splitting kindling). There are several techniques for this, but the goal is always to remove all of the wood that is not necessary for the form or function.

The Narex Small Spoon-Knife is good for lefties and is made from manganese alloy steel, but its odd angle, clunky feel, and narrow blade mean that it can rise no higher than last place. This ten week course goes beyond the basics of wood carving to explore spoons and beyond. The weekly format will allow ample time to absorb information and practice between classes, and to make projects and gain skills at their own pace.

All three versions come without a blade cover – so be careful. This new Carving Set from BeaverCraft gives carvers a wide range of capabilities – from very detailed projects to roughing out the wood. Our beginner spoons class uses only the hook and straight knives, while our advanced carving classes include the axe as well. The Number 162 hook Knife has a 2.0mm (5/64″) thick blade curved to an internal radius of 15mm (9/16″). It has cutting edges on both sides of the blade so it can be used left- or right-handed.

While it may not hold its edge as well as a carbon steel blade, the next-best option is stainless steel, so you’ll be in good shape. This model also comes with an ergonomic wooden handle which won’t bother your hands or wrists. It also comes with a wider angle on its blade than the previous model, which leads to faster cuts, making it a better choice for projects larger than spoons, such as bowls. So with all that being said, I feel the best spoon carving knife is going to be the Beavercraft hook knife. I can’t justify buying stainless steel, especially when the rest of my Mora knives have high carbon steel.

With the whittling knife, you give shape to the spoon, then with the hook knife, you cut out the spoon and smooth wood out and that’s all, your spoon is ready. This great set of 4 knives in canvas roll is intended for cutting out spoons, bowls, kuksa and other small products.

By mistake I gave away my previous Mora hook knife. Hook knife and 120 knife together is a good buy! Here’s my first Youtube tutorial, it’s on how to rough out a spoon with a hook knife, shown is a basswood blank, it cuts about like green birch.
